Antoine van Leeuwenhoek discovered microorganisms in the water, but believed they were harmful.
1960s
George Robinson invented bioremediation through experimentation with microbes.
1972
The first public use of microbes was to clean fuel tanks on the RMS Queen Mary, an ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean.
1989
Bioremediation was used to clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and in turn popularized it.
1990s
Bioremediation was used in 4 major oil spills. The quality of microbes increased through further research.
2005
The
Desulfobacteraceae
family is discovered.
